Osama bin Laden Was Almost made in Man of the Year by Time Magazine
There is a little misunderstanding around the title “Man of the Year” or “Person of the Year” given by Time Magazine every year. For the readers and audience of the printed media, the meaning is one – the most positively influential persona of the year. The staff at Time, though, considers it better described as just “most influential person” of the year. Not necessarily positive, that is.
This is why, in 2001, man of the year was almost named Osama bin Laden. The leader of the terrorist attacks in the States and many other countries, however, was finally replaced by Rudy Giuliani. The reason was not the fact that making such a negative person the top face of the year, but rather the fact that the editor-in-chief decided he was in fact just ‘lucky’ that the events on 9/11 and afterwards happened as they did. The editors also said that he was just like a garden gnome, something small and unimportant.
